Every building requires sufficient fire equipment. That will ensure that you and the other people using the building can deal with a fire emergency. An essential part of fire safety equipment is fire extinguishers. Every building should have fire extinguishers to deal with fire-related emergencies. Here are care and maintenance tips to ensure that your fire extinguishers are working in case of an emergency.

Monthly visual inspections

You should ensure that you visually inspect the fire extinguishers. Ensure that the seals are intact. Check for any other damage to the extinguisher. It would help if you also look for damage to the nozzle and the hose. If there are holes in the tube, it will not be effective. Find out whether the hose is blocked, because if there are blockages in the hose, the fire extinguishers will not be useful in an emergency. During this visual inspection, check the positioning of your fire extinguishers. They should be placed all around the building so that they can be easily accessible to users in an emergency. Ensure you have set the extinguishers within reach.

Annual inspections

You should ensure that you get a trained inspector to assess your fire extinguishers. A fire inspector can give your extinguishers a thorough inspection. Since he or she has the experience, he will be able to advise you on the placement of the extinguishers. He or she has the necessary know-how to check the mechanical parts of the fire extinguishers. He or she will also advise you on the best type of extinguishers for your building. The inspector will record the fire inspection on the fire extinguisher's tags.

Six-year inspections

It would help if you had a six-year review done on your fire extinguishers. This inspection is similar to the annual inspection. However, during this inspection, the inspector will empty the cans and refill them again. During this inspection, the fire inspector can check the mechanical part of the extinguishers. It is also an excellent opportunity to have the old hoses replaced. If there are any problems, the inspector will give you guidelines on the required course of action. If everything is in excellent condition, then the fire extinguishers will be refilled. They will then be pressurized and resealed. The inspector will also make a record of the inspection of the can.

All fire equipment in your building should be in good condition. That will ensure you are ready for any fire emergency that occurs. Contact fire equipment suppliers to learn more.
